Ags Connolly has always been a songwriter first and foremost - Currently known as the standard bearer for traditional country music in the UK and Europe, it was the simple directness of the songs - rather than the style and imagery - that first brought Ags to the genre.
Ags has already established himself as a formidable writer on his four previous studio albums (as well as a stylist and interpreter on his 2024 tribute to Texas troubadour James Hand). But on new album Yesterday's Man, the Oxfordshire native decided it was time to push things further, focusing on the songs even more closely than before:
"In the past I've encountered audiences who maybe didn't see me as a writer - who might've thought I was just paying tribute to my heroes. I realised I had to start telling people the songs I was playing were all mine, and that I'll hold them up against anybody's. Sometimes you have to bash people over the head with it."
