Butch Hancock with his latest release War and Peace revisits his electric folk/country roots to produce something akin to Bob Dylan with a West Texas twang. Playing harmonica, guitars, bass, drums, banjo and keyboards, War and Peace has a very personal feel with Hancock appearing almost as a one-man band.
The message is overtly political, but his targets are not just the easy pickings of the Bush administration, and Hancock is crying out for peace, no matter who can make it happen. The song Damage Done lists other, earlier masters of war, which clearly leaves him with no answers as to how he can achieve his wish.
A primarily acoustic album, Butch Hancock is joined on War and Peace by fellow Flatlanders Joe Ely and Jimmie Dale Gilmore adding their superb harmonies, and the cuts on War and Peace do stand on their own as fine examples of country/folk regardless of the message behind them.
A brave and personal message from one of the Texas stalwarts.
