Viridian
The Greencards have been making waves for some time as one of the new, young bands offering up traditional Bluegrass. Viridian is the third release from the Austin based band who unusually number British and Australians in their lineup.
The pop-grass tones of Nickel Creek and Alison Krauss are typical starting points. Carol Young's vocals can be tender and powerful as the occasion requires, and their musicianship is without question. Stints supporting Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan have probably played their part in sharpening their skills.
The Greencards probably have some way to go to win the hearts and minds of the traditionalists who will be uncomfortable at their ability to move so easily between pure tradition and pop, but the celtic-flavoured instrumentals on Viridian with the expert picking on display should certainly go some way towards convincing the few remaining doubters.
