True is the fourth studio album from Kevin Montgomery and as with his previous offerings, 2:30am, Another Long Story and Fear Nothing, True is of the highest quality, using some of the best musicians Nashville has to offer to supplement the finest tenor most of us are likely to hear.
Recorded at the 16 Tons studio on Music Row (owned and run by co-producer Danny White) the guests on the album include the vocal talents of rising star Ashley Monroe, high quality drumming from Paul Griffith (John Prine, Will Kimbrough, Slaid Cleaves) and long-time cohort Al Perkins on pedal and lap steel. The contribution of the veteran guitarist (Nash Ramblers, Flying Burrito Bros, Gram Parsons) is a vitally important ingredient to the success of this CD, which also features cameo appearances from touring buddies ex-Mavericks Robert Reynolds and Paul Deakin, and guitarist extraordinaire, Mike McAdam.
A new departure on True is the extensive use of strings, expertly scored and performed by Chris Carmichael (fans will be familiar with his work on Cherokee City on the 2:30am album from 2003). True follows the typical Montgomery mix of rockers and sensitive, heart-rending ballads, undoubtedley the most poignant of these is Nothing, dedicated to the memory of Kevin's daughter.
Montgomery Jnr. pays tribute to his notable musical heritage with a vintage sound on his cover of Back In Baby's Arms, which was a hit for Patsy Cline, and written by his father Bob Montgomery. Bob's earlier works included co-writing many of Buddy Holly's hits, including Wishing and Heartbeat.
A fine addition to the clutch of great albums by one of Americana's shining lights.
