Thirteen Cities
Richmond Fontaine from Oregon are critically lauded in the same way as their more famous counterparts My Morning Jacket and to some extent Ryan Adams. Unfortunately commercial success for Richmond Fontaine continues to elude them, but perhaps their seventh studio album Thirteen Cities will see a chnage in fortune for the four piece.
Having temporarily relocated to Tuscon Arizona, Thirteen Cities appears to have revitalised the band, and the title of the album relates to Richmond Fontaine's journey around the South West, capturing the character of each city in turn. Tuscon residents Calexico's leaning towards the use of horns and synthesisers has rubbed off, particularly evident on Moving Back Home #2.
Willy Vlautin's tried and tested lyrical style is much in evidence with yet more stories of drifters and losers. The experimentation of the early tracks gives way to the country-rock more associated with Richmond Fontaine, leaving Thirteen Cities taking a few tentative steps towards a new direction before reverting to type.
