The Origin of the Wasteland
The sound & style of The Origin Of The Wasteland take us back in time. Not too far mind. Blind Robins are kind of late eighties, early nineties, when bands like Uncle Tupelo, Miracle Legion & Green On Red were paving the way for what would grow up to be Alternative Country. Green on Red is perhaps the closest comparison here, circa No Free Lunch. It is cow- punk, but the riffs are held in check, utilising less attack and overdrive than we heard on, say, Still Feel Gone.
They graft punk elements onto country music, not the other way around. It has to be said that The Origin of the Wasteland does little to take our beloved Americana anywhere we have not been previously. But it is delivered with a swagger, enthusiasm & panache, which betray their apparent inexperience at making records. Closer Halving the Compass has a loose, early Chris Mills feel to it ...'Think of this as a country song, a drunken roll through all the little things', a comparison only compounded by Adam Davis beautiful pedal steel parts, which hold the whole composition together. ~ Full Review at Americana UK
