The Moon Was Blue
Wow. Cue up The Moon Was Blue and you'd swear someone had punched in some great '70s 8-track tape that your uncle never played while you were around. What Bare pulls off here is making an album that sounds both familiar and timeless, and for those who take the time to spin through this entire set they'll likely recognize it as one that will sound no less impressive and moving in ten more years.
Bobby Bare's son, Bobby Bare Jr., helped his dad to get a record deal for his first album in many years, and Bare Jr.'s co-production with Mark Nevers wraps Bare's vocals in shifting settings that perfectly match the singer with his chosen songs. It's startling how many terrific performances are contained, from the countrypolitan stroll of Are You Sincere, to a stirring Yesterday When I Was Young (Roy Clark's hit, and a great choice here), through a musically contemporary updating of Everybody's Talkin', and into Shel Silverstein's The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan, one of the album's high marks. ~ Plan9 Music
