The Brightness
Anais Mitchell has followed up her highly-regarded album Hymns For The Exiled with another excellent slice of observational folk with The Brightness, released in 2007.
Living above a studio in Vermont, The Brightness was captured around the clock, with Anais Mitchell being able to roll out of bed and literally capture her emotions there and then if required. Anais has travelled, and her stories are about the places she has visited - a toubadour in every sense of the word.
The production on The Brightness brings out Mitchell's delicate guitar work, with a lack of percussion and some back porch acoustic intruments highlighting the delicacy of her work. More a poet than a songwriter, Anais Mitchell blends personal issues with social commentary and manages to credit a British author on her liner notes instead of the usual musicians and accomplicies, without becoming in any way pretentious.
