Summerbirds
Summerbirds is the fourth release from Rod Picott who sets the standard for the Americana, singer-songwriter genre.
This 2007 album is as damn near perfect as you can get. All eleven tracks are written by Rod apart from two co-writes including one by his close friend Slaid Cleaves.
The opening track Jealous Stars has a great guitar riff courtesy of Pat Buchanan and is a fine opener with a rocking beat. Birds Won't Fly and Hand Me Down follow in a similar vein, the rhythm section of regular cohorts bassist Paul Slivka and drummer Paul Griffiths are aided and abetted by the wondrous violin of Amanda Shires.
The pace slows down with a couple of love songs showing just how good a vocalist Rod is, and the way he delivers the songs with real emotion and feeling is a lesson to any aspiring singer-songwriter today. ~ Maverick (UK)
