Steppin' In The Boiler House
Mark Schatz has a lengthy pedigree including stints as bass player for Nickel Creek and the late John Hartford. Steppin' In The Boiler House is the second release under his own name finds him playing banjo and, on one track, hambone (basically the art of creating music by slapping oneself).
With a basic band of banjo, bass, guitar and fiddle there are guest spots from Jerry Douglas, Tim O'Brien and Bela Fleck (who co-produced). Writing all but two of the numbers Schatz manages to create an engaging album that has stellar instrumental playing and some very engaging tunes. ~ Full Review at Americana UK
