Southern Tenant Folk Union
Southern Tenant Folk Union are a five piece outfit from the heart of England playing old-time Bluegrass and Folk with a verve and passion sometimes missing from more lauded contemporaries based across the pond.
Pat Mcgarvey is the creative force with his expert five-string banjo work, and his background playing in the highly-regarded Coal Porters has given him a solid platform on which to build the Southern Tenant Folk Union sound on their self-titled debut album.
While UK bluegrass generally enjoys a high degree of musical dexterity, the soul of the music is often understandably lacking, however this is not the case with STFU with Oliver Talkes soulful vocals at the heart of proceedings.
The overall feel of the album is suitably melancholy, but there is an urgency about the playing of the band that offsets the mood admirably. The rest of the band make-up is Pete Gow on guitar, Frances Vaux on Fiddle, Eamon Flynn on mandolin and Matt Lloyd hitting the upright bass.
