Saltbreakers
Saltbreakers is both the name of her touring band, and the name of Laura Veirs' 2007 release on Nonesuch Records.
Very much a dreamer of a poet in her songwriting, Laura Veirs still maintains a grip on the mystery of the natural world around her, but on Saltbreakers begins to explore more emotional matters. Her long-term producer Tucker Martine is again at the controls, with the band adopting their new name after formerly being called the Tortured Souls.
Unusually, the band lend backing vocals to the project, no mean feat considering the idiosyncracies of Veirs' vocal style. However, fans need not worry that Saltbreakers departs too much from the poetic extremes of Veirs' earlier work, songs of the sea are prevalent, with salt of the sea, salt of tears and salt in sweat unifying the themes the album explores.
