Ruby's Torch
Nanci Griffith has developed a reputation for alt-country sensibility and a leaning towards irish folk, so her new release Ruby's Torch is something of a new departure, but something that apparently her listeners have been asking her to do for many years.
This isn't the first time Griffith has worked with a large string section, joining the London Symphony for her 1999 homage to the Dust Bowl. On Ruby's Torch she revisits Brave Companion of the Road from her 1989 Storm album and the title track to her 1991 collection, Late Night Grand Hotel as well as interpreting songs by other notable songwriters including Tom Waits.
She has managed to steer clear of the cliches usually associated with this type of project and the results are richly rewarding. There is however a Sinatra favorite included, but In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning comes across as fresh and properly considered.
