If the adventurously atmospheric Wrecking Ball album of 1995 surprised more than a few Emmylou Harris fans, then Red Dirt Girl, released in 2000 demonstrated at least that this new direction wasn't a one-off.
Red Dirt Girl is if anything an even more radical shift, with echoed vocals, etheral guitar work and drum machine effects blending Emmylou Harris' graceful and immediatley identifiable vocals into a dreamy and deeply spritual, personal album. Before Red Dirt Girl, only Gilding Bird and The Ballad Of Sally Rose featured more than two original songs from Emmylou's pen, but for Red Dirt Girl 11 of the 12 tracks were written or co-written by Harris.
Emmylou Harris has always excelled at bringing in the best musicians in the business to help her albums along, and Red Dirt Girl is no exception, with Patty Griffin, Julie Miller, Dave Matthews and even Springsteen and Patti Scialfa turning up, needless to say all are exceptional performances.
Red Dirt Girl won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 2001
