Quartet
Musical virtuoso Tony Rice (Guitar) and veteran Instrumentalist and Singer-Songwriter Peter Rowan find themselves on their latest release Quartet together again for a second collaboration. This time they are joined by Bryn Davies and Sharon Gilchrist on harmony vocals, bass and mandolin.
Bluegrass is of course the glue that holds Tony Rice and Peter Rowan together, but the improvisational elements of Quartet take some interesting routes, not least the breathtaking 8 minute revisit of of Peter Rowan's Moonlight Midnight, and a version of his earlier Walls Of Time which was of course co-written with Bill Monroe.
The choice of songs is equally intruiging, pulling in a Townes Van Zandt song (To Live Is To Fly) and Trespasses from the songbook of Patti Smith. The finale of the album is three back-to-back uplifting spiritual cuts. Peter Rowan's timeless vocals together with Tony Rice's outstanding picking make for a solid and creative partnership on Quartet.
