With her debut album Origin Story, Idgy Vaughn has burst onto the Austin TX music scene and pulled the rug from under everyone with her clear, bright vocals and her own version of alt.country which Idgy herself describes as 'Twisted Texicana'.
However her music is labelled, Idgy Vaughn has definitely managed to steer a clear course through the path of country, pop and rock, and drawn in fans of all three genres at the same time. The opening track on Origin Story, Redbone Hound is infectious in the extreme and sets a high standard for this collection of originals. Humour seems to be never far away from Idgy's songwriting, and her playful sense of humour and gentle banter are much in evidence on Small Town Girl, for example, but there are hints of darker elements at play in Dragging The River.
In the midst of the hooks and catchy plots, Pearl of Georgia and Good Enough display new depths in Idgy's songwriting craft, with lyrics that are clearly very personal statements. Origin Story is blatantly autobiographical, and Idgy Vaughn's unashamed stance on recounting her life is a joy.
Radio friendly, but with enough depth to satisfy even the most critical observers, Idgy Vaughn has arrived seemingly from nowhere, but on the evidence of Origin Story, she is destined to stay around for a long time to come.
The album was produced by Paul Pearcy (Darden Smith, Jerry Jeff Walker, Terri Hendrix) and features a veritable A-Team of Austin's best and most in-demand players, including the ubiquitous Lloyd Maines and Cindy Cashdollar.
