My Name Is Buddy
Ry Cooder is a name that has been popping in to the public's consciousness for years. Some know him as the guitarist that helped out on the Stones' Sticky Fingers, others know him as the eclectic musician responsible for many albums of variable themes, but unquestionable quality.
His 2007 release My Name Is Buddy is a concept album about a talking cat, and the famed slide guitarist's 17-song opus is told from the perspective of the cat, a mouse, and a toad. Musically the album explores Southern gospel, hillbilly bluegrass and lounge jazz, with Mike and Pete Seeger providing ideological weight to the proceedings, a homage to an America hit hard by the politics of J Edgar Hoover and Joseph McCarthy.
