Iris DeMent - My Life

My Life is the follow-up to the debut album by Iris DeMent, Infamous Angel. That debut caused a stir, not least thanks to a ringing endorsement from John Prine. If her debut was a heartfelt affair, then My Life is even more so, dedicated as it is to Iris DeMent's late father, who passed away before the album was released.

A more mature set of writings than on her first album, DeMent's songs mostly deal with pain and anguish, but her magical voice gives a feeling of sentimentality to the simplest of lyrics, and even the lighter moments appearing on My Life.

Maybelle Carter's Troublesome Waters is given a fine treatment, as is Lefty Frizzell's Mom and Dad's Waltz, and her own songs, produced in Nashville by Jim Rooney with help from Jack Clement are just as powerful.
