More A Legend Than A Band
The Flatlanders debut release was More A Legend Than A Band. Recorded in Nashville in 1971 but unavailable for many years, this mix of acoustic instruments and country folk was as evocative as the West Texas flat lands after which the band was named.
Joe Ely, Butch Hancock and lead singer Jimmie Dale Gilmore have since the short-lived Flatlanders become responsible for a wide cross section of blues, singer-songwriter and country music, and on More A Legend Than A Band the slick and spiritual songwriting of Jimmie Dale Gilmore is very much in evidence. A maverick record in all senses of the word, this album is still seen as non-mainstream and has through the years confirmed the Flatlanders cult status, but the mix of talents and musical leanings on show in More A Legend Than A Band should have reaped better commercial success, rather than just the legendary status the album has adopted.
