Merle Haggard is 'The Hag' - one of the original Outlaw Country artists.

After his release from prison in the 1960s, The Hag was an early exponent of the California Bakersfield Sound, almost single-handedly introducing electric guitar to country music.

Haggard is still one of the most influential songwriters in country music since Hank Williams, and his low, grumbling, vocal style and sparkling guitar work giving a bluesy feel to his recorded output.
