Lucinda Williams
Lucinda Williams is a Grammy Award winner, was named 'America's best songwriter' by Time magazine in 2002, and is one of the most revered country rock and Americana figures amongst her fans and peers. In her early 20's Lucinda Williams released Ramblin' and Happy Woman Blues to very little acclaim before disappearing for almost a decade, resurfacing in 1988 with her self titled album, followed up by Sweet Old World in 1992. Meanwhile Lucinda was gaining a reputation as a songwriter of note, with Mary Chapin Carpenter recording a cover of Passionate Kisses from the Lucinda Williams album for which Williams received a Grammy for Best Country Song in 1994. Although Lucinda Williams contributed to other artists' albums and compilations, her notoriously slow pace of working meant that it wasn't until 1998 that her next album was released, but this was to be her mainstream breakthrough; Car Wheels On A Gravel Road. The single Still I Long for Your Kiss was featured on the album and this in turn was included on the soundtrack to The Horse Whisperer. Car Wheels On A Gravel Road was to win a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Since that time Lucinda Williams has received widespread critical acclaim for her album releases, but commerical success on a grand scale always seems to have eluded her. Emmylou Harris has been quoted as saying 'Lucinda is an example of the best of what country at least says it is. But, for some reason, she's completely out of the loop. And I feel strongly that that's country music's loss.' For more details visit the Lucinda Williams website
