Live at the Ryman [DVD]
Robert Earl Keen is captured Live at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville TN on this 75 minute DVD. Most of Keen's best-loved standards are included, along with a healthy sampling of his excellent latest studio release What I Really Mean.
It may not be Texas but the raucous crowd could easily have been transported from Gruene Hall, such is the celebratory mood. The quality of musicianship is excellent throughout, and the show builds to a climax with a red-hot version of Keen's signature song The Road Goes On Forever. The mix of humour and touching lyrics that we have come to expect from this extraordinary artist are much in evidence, and the feel good atmosphere translates perfectly to screen.
Essential viewing for all REK fans, and a great showcase and starting point for anyone wanting to find out what the fuss is all about.
The Greatest Show Ever Been Gave was recorded on Saturday November 13 2004, The Greencards opened (and turn up as guest musicians throughout the show) before Todd Snider took the stage. As REK himself observes, for his first marquee appearance, with the ghosts of the Grand Ole Opry looking down, he was overcome with stage fright ... but they played their hearts out - this is that show.
