Letters From Sinners & Strangers
New songs sounding old, and aged to perfection are difficult to find, but the songs on Eilen Jewell's 2007 release Letters From Sinners & Strangers are just that.
Jewell's music ranges from from country to jazz to blues to torch with an expressive, hushed vocal style. On her own Rich Man's World, she casts herself as a lonely rambler girl, conjuring comparisons with Gillian Welch.
There are a few non-originals that Eilen makes her own, a reading of Charlie Rich's Thanks a Lot and an understated rendition of Bob Dylan's Walking Down the Line two of the highlights.
