Leave The Light On
Leave The Light On is Chris Smither's first release on his own Mighty Albert Label, and his 12th in all. For this album Smither has turned to Ollabelle who provide a gospel-esque feel to the proceedings on Seems So Real and John Hardy. Tim O’Brien contributes mandolin and fiddle and harmony vocals bringing with him his rootsy, earthy sounds, and Sean Staples and Anita Suhanin contribute to the title track which resonates with a 70's California sound.
Chris Smither's debut was way back in 1970 with I'm a Stranger Too! but after the critically acclaimed follow-up Don't It Drag On in 1972 Smither dropped off the radar for over 10 years. His alcohol problems left him with a choice of either losing it completely or pulling himself out of it. Thankfully for all concerned he chose the latter option.
This period in his life has undoubtedley contributed to the heavy subject matter in his songs, and Leave The Light On is not an album to lift the spirits. However, his world-weariness, and his eloquent guitar work combine to make his material extremely evocative, and blues fans in particular will enjoy has latest, deeply soulful outing.
