K D Lang
KD Lang grew up on the Canadian prairies becoming fascinated with the life and music of Patsy Cline and ultimately forming a tribute band called the Reclines in 1983, releasing a debut album, Friday Dance Promenade.
Lang continued to make several recordings that received good reviews, and earned a 1985 Canadian Juno Award for Most Promising Female Vocalist. She went on to sign a recording contract in Nashville, and enjoyed much critical acclaim for her 1987 release, Angel with a Lariat, produced by Dave Edmunds.
The 1992 album Ingenue exhibited comparatively little country influence, but contained her most popular song, Constant Craving which brought her multi-million sales, critical acclaim, and the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
K.D. Lang, came out as a lesbian in 1992 and has actively championed gay rights causes. She has performed at and supported many causes over the years, including HIV/AIDS care and research.
Her animal rights vegetarian stance including a 'Meat Stinks' campaign created much controversy, particularly at her hometown in the middle of Alberta's cattle ranching industry!
