John Prine
John Prine's debut in 1971 with his self-titled album included his signature songs Illegal Smile, Sam Stone, and the newgrass standard Paradise. Prine was to be dubbed 'the next Dylan' and in subsequent years produced many fine albums that received much critical acclaim, and a little commercial success.
Prine's songwriting sets him apart from other singer-songwriters. An observer of human behaviour, tied with a wry, humorous sideswipe he produces songs with pathos and pure emotion.
In 1998 John Prine was diagnosed with throat cancer which he survived after surgery. His first all-new album since Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings in 1995, Fair and Square, won the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album and he was handed the Artist of the Year award at the 2005 Americana Music Awards.
