John Hartford recorded more than 30 albums enbracing traditional country, newgrass and folk along the way, before his passing in 2001 after a long illness. Never one to be restrained by cookie-cutter styling, his albums and performances were an amalgam of ideas, styles and experiments.
His vast body of work remains unequalled, yet had it not been for his song Gentle On My Mind, he would undoubtedley be one of the lesser known innovators of bluegrass and country. As it turned out his impact on the world of traditional music was well recognised before his death.
