I'm Staying Out
Many will know Caitlin Cary as the fiddle player in Ryan Adams' Whiskeytown, but on her solo album I'm Staying Out she steps out from the Whiskeytown shadows with a great collection of alt.country tracks that has a rootsy rock feel, but manages to echo the style of Loretta Lynn or Patsy Cline.
I'm Staying Out meanders from country torch songs to guitar-based rocking cuts via folk-rock and pop. In the same way that Lucinda Williams defies categorisation, so Caitlin Cary will find herself played on both AOR radio and country radio. The track most reminiscent of Whiskeytown is possibly Beauty Fades where Caitlin introduces fiddle and mandolin into a country rock setting.
While the ubiquitous Mr. Adams is being lauded by critics, Caitlin Cary has quietly produced one of the finest country rock albums around.
