Happy Songs From Rattlesnake Gulch
Joe Ely has carved himself out a near-legendary status as one of Texas' maverick stars. From his early days as a member of the Flatlanders, Ely's work has generated many plaudits.
Joe Ely's new release Happy Songs From Rattlesnake Gulch is a new collection of originals, plus a lively cover of his Flatlanders' sparring partner Butch Hancock's Firewater. The eclectic and observational writing is still intact, with a song about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina (Baby Needs a New Pair of Shoes) and a bandit epic (Miss Bonnie and Mr. Clyde). The West Texas blues and Joe Ely's quivering vocals still mesh as well as ever, and the charm and swagger make for the usual exhilarating mix.
Recorded near Austin, Happy Songs From Rattlesnake Gulch is both intimate and rocking, another top quality release from one of Lubbock's favourite sons.
