Hank Williams
Hank Williams is the undisputed king of Country Music, and one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. The legend that is the great Hank was gone from us at the age of 29 in 1953, enjoying a little over five years at the top of his career following many years of struggling for recognition. Williams' early life as an ill and fragile child, and his startling later years affected by drink and drugs have been the stuff of tabloid writers' dreams, but the enduring legacy of Hank Williams is undoubtedley the music; Williams had 12 number 1 hits and his songs are the staple diet of country singers to this day. His number ones included Lovesick Blues, I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry, Long Gone Lonesome Blues, Cold, Cold Heart, Hey Good Lookin', and Your Cheatin' Heart. Williams' songwriting gives a clue to the turmoil in his life, singing on one hand about the rowdier side of life (Honky Tonkin') and on the other about the aimless drifter (Lost Highway), but throwing into the mix remorseful religious numbers. Hank's son Hank Williams Jr., his daughter Jett Williams, and grandchildren Hank Williams III and Holly Williams have picked up the legacy handed on to them, and all are pursuing successful musical careers of their own.
