When I first heard this superb album my heart missed a beat, sometimes you just know you are listening to something very special. With Good Samaritan Donna Beasley has ticked all the boxes.
The title and opening track Good Samaritan definitely hits the nail on the head. Combining a haunting vocal reminiscent of Alison Krauss and superb guitar backing from husband Tom Spaulding, the song tells the tale of a phone call to a friend in need, all making for a stunning and unique track.
Classic country is the main ingredient on songs such as No One Here By That Name and So Glad I Let You Love Me, this song, a co-write with Elizabeth Cook has hit single written all over it, contemporary yet commercial.
City Of Devils on the other hand displays a distinct change of direction, heading towards stoner rock with spooky lyrics about life after dark in the big city and containing some swirling electric lead guitar from Bob Britt and Tom Spaulding.
Good Samaritan by Donna Beasley is thirteen tracks of pure pleasure and comes highly recommended and is a must for any serious collector of superb contemporary music. ~ James Soars
