Garth Brooks
 The impact Garth Brooks made on the world of country cannot be underestimated. Merging pop and rock elements with his country roots brought him enormous mainstream success, with over 115 million albums sold in the US alone throughout his 10 year reign as a top country performer.
His extravagant stage shows were renowned for their size and dramatic effect, and despite not fitting the tall, good-looking stereotype of 'New Country' artists of the early 90's Garth brooks popularity was unbridled.
Brooks seemed to appear from nowhere in 1989 with his first album release, and he disappeared from view just as quickly, announcing his retirement in October 2000, citing personal and creative frustrations as his reason.
Brooks is regarded by traditionalists as having 'dumbed down' country music to its detriment, but others would argue that his popularity has kept country music alive by introducing an entirely new generation of fans to the music. The debate will surely rumble on ...
