Hem - Funnel Cloud

Hem are one of the many acts that are hard to categorise, and end up being missed by the public as radio struggles to find a pigeon-hole for them. Listening to the new Hem album Funnel Cloud you could be taken in by the melodic guitar work and pedal steel, but just when you are thinking 'country music' then up pops a piano ballad or a string-driven instrumental.

The core of Hem is of course Sally Ellyson's voice; a dreamy and conversational instrument that gives the wistful feel to their recorded outings.

Funnel Cloud is polished, and features the interesting songs of Dan Messe which deal with everyday matters and his own personal take on them. A late night listening album for sure, relentlessly pretty and extremely nostalgic.
