John Mellencamp - Freedom's Road

John Mellencamp is the original Heartland Rocker, and on his latest release Freedom's Road he is in no mood to compromise on his anthemic, guitar based unashamed rock. To back the the powerful chiming guitars Mellencamp wears his heart on his sleeve with a number of socially-conscious, rather than political, lyrics. Joan Baez is an unexpected ally on the ballad Jim Crow.

The rock landscape has changed since Mellencamp's heyday, and even finding his videos on MTV nowadays is difficult. However his record label have supported John Mellencamp during the year-long production of Freedom's Road, and have persuaded him to lend his songs to commercials as a way of putting his music back on the radar of the populous.

Straddling the fine line between mainstream rock and country is not an easy task, but Freedom's Road may just have the right mix to appease both camps.
