Flowers and Liquor
Hayes Carll has a voice that has aged well before the rest of this young, laidback Texas singer-songwriter has. Sounding more like Steve Earle or his great friend Ray Wylie Hubbard than is decent for a guy in his twenties, Hayes Carll has released his debut album Flowers and Liquor which while inevitably containing plenty of songs of loss and despondency, thanks to his inate sense of humour, this CD never comes across as a downer record.
A more articulate and contemplative Texan than contemporaries like Pat Green and Cory Morrow, it is unlikely that Hayes Carll will take the party animals along with him. Having paid his dues in cover bands and saloons, hayes came to the attention of Lisa Morales who asked Carll to open for her and her sister, Roberta, and eventually took on production duties for Flowers and Liquor citing Carll as a cross between Townes and John Prine.
David Spencer of Sisters Morales combines with Bert Wills for the guitar drive, Michael Ramos fills in with accordion and Jeff Plankenhorn on dobro. The standout track is probably Arkansas Blues, but on Flowers and Liquor this country-tinged rocking singer-songwriter debut is full of excellent melodies and lyrics.
