The war in Iraq was the backdrop to the Crosby Stills Nash & Young Freedom Of Speech tour in 2006, and CSNY/Deja Vu is a Neil Young (Bernard Shakey) documentary about that tour, capturing the music, politics, opinions and fans.
Young performed tracks from his album Living With War alongside CSNY classics, demonstrating with some style how little the world has moved on in the ensuing four decades.
Musically, the guitar interplay of Young and Stills is the highlight, but anyone more interested in the music than the politics should check out the Deja Vu CD which features full songs, whereas this DVD has not set out to be a concert movie. An extra bonus, however, is the inclusion of all 10 of the Living With War music videos
Deja Vu is moving, funny and sad and somehow uplifting, not least seeing and feeling the conviction that burns so clearly in the belly of Neil Young. No punches are pulled, and the alternative views of many Americans can be seen and heard through the footage of the jeering and fans streaming out of the auditorium when Young launches in to Let's Impeach The President.
Essential viewing for Neil Young fans, and comes with a 100% SCM recommendation.
