Concert for Manglerdesh is a double album put together by Road Manager (Mangler) extraordinaire, Phil Kaufman, (in)famous of course for his part in the Gram Parsons legend. The CD is a no-frills recording of a 1996 concert held as a benefit for The Mangler after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Road crew don't enjoy the benefits of health insurance and unions, or even the support of ASCAP in times of need. The wealth of talent that came together for this concert bears testimony to the esteem in which Phil Kaufman is held.
What the album lacks in polished production is more than made up by the emotion and humour throughout, and some excellent treasured performances: Guy Clark introducing a new song he had written, Out In The Parking Lot; The inimitable Steve Earle providing Can't Remember If I Said Goodbye; Trisha Yearwood covering Wild Horses; Marty Stuart with You Ain't Going Nowhere and Emmylou Harris and The Nash Ramblers taking on Luxury Liner.
