Cold Mississippi
Following a recent trend of alt.country bands incorporating some soul elements in their country leanings, The Copperheads have taken things a step further on Cold Mississippi, their third release. There is a clear element of gospel creeping into their work, which is a welcome move forward as many of their peers are just now latching on to country'n'soul for their influences. Why (am I treated so bad) was once recorded by the Staple Singers and is a brave statement of intent.
On Cold Mississippi the exquisite arrangements conjour up memories of the Al Green / Lyle lovett combination from a decade or so ago. Behind the mixing desk is Tom Garneau who has worked with artists as diverse as Prince and the Breeders. He and Jacques Wait must take a lot of credit for this fine album along with Ray Barnard, who is the lead singer and songwriter in The Copperheads. Bill Davis on bass, Matthew Fox on guitar. Marc (the Artiste) Johnson behind the drums, keyboardist Thomas Larson and Jim Nee on pedal and lap steel make up the remainder of the band.
