Chicago Wind
Released in 2005, Merle Haggard's Chicago Wind is the latest in a consistently high quality catalogue of albums from this living legend of Country Music. A fully paid up member of the original Outlaw Country movement, Haggard's voice just seems to get better with age, and this collection of mostly originals plus songs by Roger Miller and Willie Nelson is up there with his best.
Another legend, Jimmy Bowen, comes out of retirement to add his production values to Chicago Wind, and adds something extra, some additional maturity, to a re-recording of 1973's White Man Singin' The Blues. The only nod towards todays country-pop is a duet with Toby Keith (another Nashville Maverick) which could see Chicago Wind getting mainstream airplay, but probably not.
Magnificent, touching Ballads, Honky-Tonk bravado and political commentary from the pen of one of country's elder statesmen, back on his old stomping ground at Capitol Records.
