Buddy Holly
Although Buddy Holly's professional music career lasted only about eighteen months before his untimely death, he is revered as one of the most influential and creative forces in early rock and roll. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in particular were heavily influenced by Holly together with countless other artists in the decades since.
Holly formed The Crickets at Norman Petty's studios in Clovis, New Mexico and began releasing his hugely impressive body of work. An ill-conceived solo tour with Dion DiMucci, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper brought his career to a premature end when after a performance in Clear Lake, Iowa Buddy Holly chartered an aircraft to take him and his new back-up band (Tommy Allsup and Waylon Jennings) to the next show.
Famously, Ritchie Valens was signing autographs after the show when he and Allsup flipped a coin for a seat on the plane. Tommy lost. Holly, Valens, Richardson, and the pilot, Roger Peterson were killed when the plane crashed shortly after take-off.
