Buck Owens
Buck Owens enjoyed twenty number-one hits on the country music charts both as a solo artist and with his band, the Buckaroos (so named by Merle Haggard, a former bandmate). Owens' guitar style pioneered what has become known as the Bakersfield sound.
The Buck Owens sound was characterized by sharp staccato guitar riffs, and pedal steel guitar solos, with straightforward lyrics and was modern and streamlined compared to the less sophisticated country music of the forties. His close friend Don Rich can be heard harmonizing on all of Owens hits until his untimely death in 1974, which devastated Owens for years and effectively halted his singing successes and career until Owens performed again with Dwight Yoakam in the late eighties.
Buck Owens was also known as co-host on the Hee Haw TV show with Roy Clark between 1969 and 1986 and his immense musical legacy was eventually lost in March 2007 when Owens passed away.
