Broken Things
Broken Things is the follow-up to Julie Miller's critically-acclaimed debut Blue Pony. Released in 1999, husband Buddy Miller again produces and lends his guitar playing talents to the album, and a host of the leading lights in Americana step in to lend their support and vocal artistry to Broken Things, including Patty Griffin, Victoria Williams, Emmylou Harris, and Steve Earle.
Julie Miller's combination of earthiness and little girl lost vocals have an enduring charm, but also give an emotive edge to Miller's excellent songwriting. I Still Cry is one of the emotional highlights on an album that blends bluesy, rootsy twang with classic balladeering. However, the title track, with its link to the memorial service for the Northern Ireland Omagh bombing never fails to move. These two tracks alone would mark down Broken Things as a masterpiece, but the remainder of the album also manages to match the quality, if not the emotional impact of these two tracks.
