Bluegrass
Bluegrass, an apt title if ever there was one, 'does exactly what it says on the tin' and sees Jim Lauderdale going back to the music of his roots. Despite recording CDs with the legendary Ralph Stanley, Lauderdale is better known for his country-pop work. A regular Bluegrass album from one of the most underestimated artists around is long overdue.
A prolific songwriter, lauderdale could have easily revisited elements from his earlier catalog, but he decided to write the songs specifically for this project, other than an earlier collaboration with Buddy Miller, and a song written with John Leventhal from several years back.
Many of the songs started out as country tunes, but fitted the Bluegrass genre so well that they were easily transformed into a more traditional sound. In a time where very little popular country music has a traditional feel, Jim Lauderdale is bringing back traditional values while managing to make his music equally accessible.
