Bill Monroe
Bill Monroe was responsible for developing the style of music known as bluegrass, which takes its name from his band, the Blue Grass Boys, named for Monroe's home state of Kentucky.
Monroe's performing career spanned 60 years as a singer, instrumentalist, composer and bandleader and he is known as as 'the father of bluegrass.'
Bill Monroe was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1970, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Jimmie Rodgers, Bob Wills, Hank Williams and Johnny Cash are the only other performers honoured in all three.
