Begonias by Thad Cockrell and Caitlin Cary sees two of the Yep Roc stablemates join forces for an at first unlikely country duets album. Nominated for Duo/Group of the year at the 2006 Americana Music Awards, Begonias has been well received in Americana circles for these unique and formidable talents.
Caitlin Cary has some past history as the fiddle player in Ryan Adams' Whiskeytown, and Thad Cockrell is a new name to many, distinguishable by his strong tenor. Anyone that thinks Parton/Rogers when thinking of country duets would do better to think of Harris/Parsons as this is country with lashings of alt.country overtones.
Originally North Carolina neighbours, there is an immediate chemistry in this album, and there is an energy sadly lacking in other, lesser quality duet projects. Cary herself says that this is the first album she has been involved in where she wanted to come home and listen to it, which says something given her past history in Whiskeytown.
Begonias is an album that takes time to listen to and appreciate, but it is well worth the effort.
