Will Kimbrough is a busy man. One of the most sought-after session players and producers in the US, his solo releases have also built up a sizeable following, both in America and abroad.
Americanitis, released in 2006, represents a major shift in gears, as Kimbrough makes a bold, political statement, and in doing so has ramped up even further his reputation as a musician and songwriter.
Reaching back into the history books, the influences on Americanitis are those of the folk protest movements of the sixties; Seeger and Baez, and then even further back to Woody Guthrie himself.
This is not to say that Americanitis is a purely a folk album, there are electric blues, rock and some sixties-inspired pure pop in the collection, but all with the lyrical undercurrent of a man that wants to express his opinions about the world, and the many ills that ail it today.
Wil Kimbrough is one of the most important figures in music today. He represents the new wave of Americana artists that are making a difference musically and socially. True heart and soul; something rare that we need to treasure and nurture in today's world of manufactured gloss.
