Johnny Paycheck was one of the original Outlaw Country mavericks. His recordings in the 1960's on the Little Darlin' label are rightfully acclaimed as some of the most influential of the genre. Paycheck was something of a protege of George Jones, and with the same longevity as Jones, Johnny Paycheck was still revered into the late seventies, where his voice had developed into the gargling-with-gravel grittiness most of us remember.
Shakin' the Blues is a retrospective that may surprise fans who are more aware of his later works, where Johnny Paycheck running under the name of Donny Young is captured in the 50's and 60's, often using the George Jones backing band for his recordings.
Hardcore country honky-tonk, this collection is a must for Johhny Paycheck fans, and anyone interested in the early years formation of what was to become Outlaw Country.
